Jaeger Schnitzel, Spaetzle & Sweet and Sour...
Inspired by the purchase of a bag of spaetzle, I decided to make my Papa a German feast for Christmas this year. I have many memories of him taking me to the Hofbrau Haus and wanted to recreate some of that experience at home. I hadn’t really cooked German food before beyond Stroganoff so this was a great way to experiment with a new cuisine and get in touch with my German roots. I...

Momofuku Sesame Ginger Rice Krispie Treats
I’m not really a baker. It’s because I don’t really like to measure things and baking requires precision, which is why I was attracted to the recipe for Momofuku Sesame-Ginger Rice Krispie Treats: no baking required! Plus they’re a little bit less sinful than some of the other holiday treats out there. The only minor hassle involved scrubbing the melted marshmallow...

Zucchini Dill Waffle Latkes
While it’s not an annual tradition, on several occasions my family has cooked latkes on Christmas Eve but a few years ago my mom burned herself with the hot oil. So when I came across this Cara’s Craving recipe last week for Zucchini Dill Latkes made in a waffle maker and because this year Christmas and Hanukkah fall in the same week, I figured it was a perfect occasion to try a new...

Spaghetti Squash with Chunky Soyrizo Marinara
Since I’ve been away from my own kitchen for nearly two weeks, it was nice to prepare dinner at my parent’s house tonight. My mom challenged me to figure out what to do with a spaghetti squash, soyrizo and an assortment of vegetables in the fridge. Erica in the City’s suggestion for Spaghetti Squash with Chunky Soyrizo Marinara fit the bill perfectly.
Alterations: I cooked...

Apple Cider Cream Pie
My family is very divided when it comes to desserts. My dad doesn’t like fruit pies, except for apple. My grandpa prefers cream pies and I just like to make something new. When I saw Food & Wine’s Apple Cider Cream Pie, I felt like I finally found a dessert that would please everyone.
Alterations: Sadly, I did not make my pie crust by hand. It’s one of those things that...

Sweet Potato Biscuits with Soyrizo Gravy
Last night’s dinner was another adventure in googling recipes to use up items in my fridge. This week’s contestants included sweet potatoes and soyrizo which were transformed into the delicious Sweet Potato Biscuits with Soyrizo Gravy courtesy of a recipe from Cooking Architecture. Since the bloggers didn’t like Mark Bittman’s Sweet Potato biscuits, I tried a recipe from...

Ham and Cheese Quiche
After Thanksgiving, I had a leftover pie crust plus a half dozen eggs in my fridge - perfect for a throw-whatever-else-is-in-the-fridge quiche. Since I had some applewood ham and a block of sharp cheddar in my fridge, I based my ratio/recipe on this Allrecipes version of Ham ‘N’ Cheese Quiche.
Alterations: Since the recipe made two quiches, I cut it in half. Instead of dried onion,...

Pumpkin Tortilla Soup
This weekend I’m headed to Palm Springs for a little spa getaway with some friends and next week, I’m headed back to San Francisco so it’s time to clear out the fridge. Who would have thought that canned pumpkin and stale tortillas could turn into a spicy luscious soup? Thanks to TheKitchn’s Pumpkin Tortilla Soup recipe for the inspiration.
Alterations: Based on the...
